Abstract:

Pattern formation in materials can often be explained in the framework of the
calculus of variations as the result of a competition between different energy contributions. Typical examples include microstructures in shape-memory alloys and the formation of quantum dots. In this talk, modern techniques and recent results of the mathematical analysis of such variational problems will be discussed, which often have non-local or non-convex contributions.
